ABOUT US:
The idea of the Scarborough Summer Fest was conceived by the late Sandra Hutley and Sarah Sanyal to create a community event that would enable residents in Kingston Road/Galloway/Orton Park, a priority neighbourhood of the city to come together, thrive and strengthen the community they live in. Over several meetings at local coffee shops and over the phone the two visionaries shared their idea with other like minded people and began the task of planning the festival. One such individual was Ravi Kumar, the Executive Director of SPUR, a not-for-profit organization whose mandate was to help nurture, support and resource grassroots groups like these. Together, the trio crafted a vision of an event that not only brought residents together but was also inclusive, engaged other community agencies, local businesses, politicians, bureaucrats and other stake holders to create a collective buzz in a priority neighbhourhood and above all foster social and economic well-being of the community. The first hurdle to cross was funding for the event. Having imagined the event,SPUR worked to access funding for the festival. SPUR was able to procure a significant grant from the City of Toronto that will allow the festival committee to run and manage this event.
Earlier this year, tragically Sandra Hutley was taken ill, had to be hospitalized and passed away on May 20. Though she will not be here for the Festival and not be able to see her efforts come to fruition, we pledge to work hard to accomplish all that she wanted at the Festival.
The Scarborough Summer Fest will provide residents with a gathering space, where neighbours and visitors can connect with one another while enjoying eclectic food, diverse music and participate in fun activities. Community members will showcase their crafts and local vendors can display their wares to attract customers from the community and across the city. The Festival will enhance community living and connect the young and old, new-comers and old time residents to foster greater community well-being and inclusiveness.
