Active Seniors Body and Mind
The Active Seniors Body & Mind project is co-ordinated by the grassroots organization; We are for
Women and Family Support Services (WWFSS) through funding from the province of Ontario that was facilitated by SPUR. The program will enroll seniors for activities each day of the week for a total of 13 weeks of activities. The seniors will participate in both physical and sedentary activities each week which will benefit their physical and mental health. Activities will include stretching, movement, yoga, board games, card games, storytelling, art and music. Many of the seniors will be given the opportunity to volunteer their time during the project thereby making it not only inclusive but also a rewarding experience and enabling them to be part of the social fabric of their communities.
This seniors’ program will be held in conjunction with the Scarborough Summer Fest at St. Margaret in-the-Pines Park at 4130 Lawrence Ave. E. in Scarborough. This will allow the seniors to gather in a space that has other community members enjoying the many events at the Fest. Seniors will enjoy this welcoming public space to carry out the activities under the Active Seniors Body & Mind program.
SPUR not only accessed funding for the seniors’ program but was instrumental in crafting collaboration between the Scarborough Summer Fest and WWFSS to hold the Active Seniors Body & Mind project.
The Active Seniors Body & Mind project will be run as a collaborative model that will have other community groups lend their support to achieve better outcomes and ultimately contribute to the well-being of a priority neighbhourhood. Further we hope to replicate this project model in other
communities in the city of Toronto and beyond
